What do you do when your social security card is lost or stolen

Having your social security card stolen or lost can be devastating since your ID number is now available to the world. However, there are steps to take to replace the card and make sure your identity is secure.

Replacement card

In order to obtain another social security card you need to go to the local Social Security Administration (SSA) and request a replacement card. You must complete Form SS-5, for another card.

Required documents

To obtain a replacement you will need to provide original documentation that proves your identity and citizenship. Documents that will meet the identity and citizenship requirements include an updated driving license or state issued identification, birth certificate and passport.

Limitations

You are allowed to receive three replacements of your social security card in a period of one year and a maximum of 10 in your life, according to the SSA. There are exceptions to this rule, such as having legally changed your name if you were to marry.

Warning

To prevent your social security card from being lost or stolen, try not to carry it with you. Keep your social security card and only take it with you when you need it, such as for a visit to the doctor or when you apply for a job.
